Social bookmarking

These services allow registered users to recommend (for or against) articles that they find almost anywhere on the site. By aggregating their many users’ recommendations, these sites attempt to give an index of the most popular articles across the Internet at a given time. Examples include Digg, StumpleUpon, and Del.icio.us.

Software

The programs required for the computer to perform desired operations.

System software

Software that makes the entire computer system operate sufficiently. It is provided by the manufacturer.

TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is the standardized set of computer guidelines that allow different types of machines to talk with each other and exchange information over the Internet.

Trim size

The size in which a book will be printed. Trim sizes are always indicated as width in inches by height in inches. A trim size of 6"x9" means the printed book will be 6 inches wide and 9 inches tall.

Upload

Transfer of information or data files from a user’s computer to another computer.

URL

Uniform (universal) Resource Locator. A unique identifier that points to a specific site on the World Wide Web.

Virus

Software designed to cause damage to computers or files. Viruses generally enter a computer system via files received on floppy disk or over networks.

VoIP

Voice Over Protocol is the real-time transmission of voice signals over the Internet or IP network. The technology is also capable of transmitting two-way video conferencing.

Web site

An organization’s or individual’s Web pages, the first of which is called the home page.

Wiki

Wikis allow many users to simultaneously edit shared content. Wikipedia is the most well-known example. Wikis can be used to compile meeting agendas or for creating extensive text documents and to support collaboration on a given topic. An example is a wiki provided by the Task Force of the Health Information Management Systems Society regarding use of clinical decision support for healthcare performance improvement.
